Advanced Ceramics - Zirconia

Zirconia is a unique advanced ceramic - a chemical compound having the formula ZrO2.

Products manufactured from Tosoh's yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) powder exhibit superior mechanical properties such as high strength and flexibility. As a technological breakthrough, YSZ surpasses the strength limitations of traditional fine ceramics. Heat insulating properties and oxygen-ion conductivity indicate zirconia has potential for use in a wide variety of applications - everything from telecommunications to the new energy of the future and environmentally beneficial products.

A business unit within its Specialty Materials Division, Tosoh Corporation’s zirconia powder production capacity ranks as the world’s largest.

Tosoh’s TZ Series of yttria stabilized zirconia powders is well known for its consistency and high quality. Zirconia injection molding compounds, injection molded components and YTZ® Grinding Media complete the basic product offering.

Tosoh also offers zirconia compounds for injection molding (using its TZ-3Y-E zirconia powder), developed based on our proven experience in manufacturing zirconia injection components (ferrule blanks).

TZ-3Y-E, TZ-3YB-E

Partially-stabilized zirconia powder with uniform dispersion of 3 mol % yttria. TZ-3Y-E exhibits superior sintering properties and higher aging resistance at a lower sintering temperature of 1300ºC. Sintered bodies produced with TZ-3Y-E show a fine crystal grain structure resulting in greater improvements in strength, fracture toughness, as well as resistance to wear and aging. TZ-3Y-E has numerous applications including materials for industrial parts and everyday products.

TZ-3YS-E, TZ-3YSB-E, TZ-3YSB-C

S grades have a smaller surface area that contributes to a smooth flow for the compound or slurry in injection molding, tape casting, and other molding methods. S grades are highly recommended for producing large parts by a mechanical press or CIP.

Zirconia Grinding & Dispersion Media

  • Higher density provides a greater impact force resulting in superior grinding efficiency.
  • Smooth surface, almost perfect roundness/sphericity and narrow size distribution, resulting in higher productivity grinding and dispersion.
  • Produced from high purity materials, has a higher wear resistance which results in minimizing product contamination from media wear.
  • Higher wear resistance results in less frequent media replacement.
  • Provides optimum results when used in wet grinding and dispersing applications, including the processing of highly viscous materials.
  • Resistant to rust and corrosion, and thus compatible with water based processing.
